Food Fight Birthday Party Theme

by Ami
(Pickerington, Ohio)

My son is turning 7 in December. He is forever asking us at the dinner table if we could have a food fight.

I think it would be a terrific idea to have a food fight party for his birthday this year. The problem is we live in Ohio and it's likely to be very cold on his birthday if not have snow on the ground.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where we can have his party. Our basement isn't an option since it is finished and we can't clear out the garage in order to have it in there.

I'm having a hard time thinking of some place I can rent for a couple hours to be able to do this.

I haven't said anything to my son yet about the idea, but I know he would think it was the best birthday ever if we could do this for him. Please help!!!

Food Fight Birthday Party - Part Two
by: Grandpa Mike

Wow!

You really did it - you put together an original, fun-filled "food fight" birthday party.

I loved the idea of color coded teams, complete with color coded food. And the rules and safety were excellent.

Your party pictures must be lots of fun.

We really want to SEE all the fun, so please take a moment to put together your free Party Page - post your best food fight pictures and tell us all about your child's food fight birthday party.

Have FUN

My son had an awesome food fight party!
by: Anonymous

My son had such a great food fight party for his 6th birthday, that we are repeating it again on Thursday for his 10th.

After the first party, all the others paled in comparison and kids were always asking for the food fight party again! So back by popular demand.... here we go again!

What we did was to purchase two relatively cheap "event tents", the type with poles and a shaded cover, but open on the sides. We placed them about 20 feet apart, and completely enclosed the entire thing is sheet plastic from home depot.

We laid plastic on the floor as well. My husband cut a few holes in the sides of the "battle arena" for parental viewing.

When kids arrived they were assigned either to the orange team or the blue team. Team members wore orange or blue goggles I purchased from the dollar store.

The teams spent some time together making "egg grenades" and mixing their team color into mashed potatoes, and water bottles. The water bottles with the pop-tops work great as "battle guns" and a drop of food coloring can tint the water to match the team.

Wherever possible we tried to make the food either blue or orange, to represent the team colors. We went over the rules, safety precautions, etc, and then let the battle begin.

You can usually tell who's "winning" by how much of the colored food the kids are wearing.

In the end, no one really cares about who won.

The fun is in the battle.

Afterward we hosed them off and let them jump in the pool (temp. permitting). We explain everything they need to know in the invitation, so children know to wear an old bathing suit, bring a towel - etc.

Creative Food Fight Birthday Party
by: H. Shepard

My son is turning 6 and actually chose this theme himself:

1. Tomato Throwing: I am making a huge pizza target and laminating it and kids can throw the ripest, rottenest tomatoes I can get my hands on at it.

2. Popcorn Palooza: I am popping tons of popcorn and then planning on buying popcorn buckets and letting them throw it at each other outside where it can be left for the birds when we are done.

3. Watermelon Wars: Blowing up balloons and decorating them with markers to look like watermelons and filling a room with them. Let them go crazy playing, tossing, popping them.

4. Food Art: Make large cookies and give them paint brushes, thinned icing in various colors, candy toppings and let them mess and create away.
The "cake" is from Marble Slab (he doesn't like cake) and is a brownie layer, birthday cake ice cream with fudge swirl and then topped with decorative piles of broken cones, candy chunks etc arranged to be cute.

I can't wait to see how it turns out but we find the homemade parties tend to be very memorable for all of us!

Food Fight Birthday Party Theme - Huh?
by: Grandpa Mike

Ami:

Your post is to say the least, a bit unusual. And I'm sure you can understand why someone might feel that what you have written is a joke...

However, Grandma Mary and Grandpa Mike are fun loving folks, so we're willing to go along with this "unusual" question.

You could have a fun party indoors and then go outside for the messy food fight. Even if it's cold with snow on the ground.

Are you going to have the children put on protective clothing so they don't get covered in food?

Have you ask any of the other parents how they feel about their child participating in a food fight?

What kind of food are you planning to have the children "throw"?

Consider this:

Rent a movie called "The Great Race" starring Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis. About 3/4 of the way through the movie is the best pie fight in the history of cinema. The scene goes on for a long time, it's hysterically funny and your 7 year old food fighting enthusiast will absolutely love it.

I once took a pie in the face on a TV show and I can tell you it was very messy.

OK, now back to realty -- what theme would your child really like? And what kind of party would you like to put together?

If you opt for a real pie fight, just make sure you use your child's favorite -- he may just end up wearing it.

Grandpa Mike

Have fun (and keep lots of paper towels on hand)
