So much has been written about where the pinata originated and today, most people think the pinata originated in Mexico. But others believe the pinata has it's origins in Italy where it was called a pignatta, meaning "fragile pot."

The pignatta was filled with jewelry, candy or other trinkets and hung from a rope and swung while a blindfolded player struck at it with a stick. Then just like today, when the pignatta was broken, guests would pick up the fallen goodies.

In the 14th century, "pinata Sunday" was the name given the first Sunday during the celebration of Lent.

The Spanish Pinata

In Spain, the first Sunday of Lent in Spain was referred to as "Dance of the Pinayta."

Spanish explorers brought the tradition of pinatas filled with candy and fruit, then having both children and adults play the game where sticks were used to break open the pinata, then everyone ran to pick up the treats.

Today, pinatas come in just about and size and shape you can imagine and they can be filled with candy, fruit, toys, jewelry and just about anything else.

And there are now two kinds of pinatas. The traditional pinata that players try to break open with a stick and The "pull string pinata," which is often used for younger children or elderly adults.

Built in March 1990 to help celebrate the Carnival Miami/Calle Ocho. The world's largest pinata was a whopping 27 feet tall and weighed an incredible 10,000 pounds.
