How to create a peanut-free birthday cake

by Nikki
(Santa Clarita, CA, USA)

We recently discovered that our daughter is severely allergic to peanuts. Because of that, we wanted to be sure to bake a "safe" birthday cake for her.

We started our search for a cake and frosting mix at Whole Foods Market (they have a large supply of specialty items for folks with allergies). We used the Cherrybrook Farms brand yellow cake mix and also their chocolate frosting mix.

These mixes can also be prepared dairy-free if your child has a milk allergy.

We decided to search out special Elmo decorations at various party supply stores that would also be peanut-free to top off the "safe" cake.

My daughter was turning three and she loved the idea of an all Elmo birthday party.

We were able to provide a very cute Elmo birthday cake that we knew was completely free of peanuts just by doing a bit of leg work to some local shops.

So, if your child has a peanut allergy and you don't necessarily have the time to bake a cake and frosting from scratch, Cherrybrook Farms mixes are for you.

Throw in a couple of pre-made sugar decorations of your choice, a special themed candle, and you've got yourself a pretty cool (and completely safe) cake for your little one.

Special Birthday Cakes - Easier to make it yourself
by: TeaPartyMom

I definitely commend you for all of the searching you did, but since my children have milk and nut allergies, I find it easier to make most of their stuff from scratch. Since you normally have most of the supplies on hand anyway, you can cater to each child's allergies.
In the end this saves a lot of gas!

Great Idea

There are so many children with allergy problems and most cake recipes don't take that into consideration.

Your peanut-free recipe sounds yummy and lots of fun.

Do you have a picture? If so, we'd love to see it!
