1. Mix blue food coloring into a large bowl of frosting until you get a desired jean color. 2. Mix yellow food coloring into a smaller amount of food coloring for the stitching. 3. Cut the dome off of the cake using a serrated knife. Flip the cake over. 4. Cut off a section starting about an inch from one of the long sides. 5. Cut a ‘V’ into the cake for the legs, then cut the triangle you’ve cut into two smaller pieces, lengthwise. These two pieces will be adhere to the outside of the jean pant legs to create flares. 6. Place the cake on a serving platter, using frosting as ‘glue’ underneath to keep the cake from sliding. Assemble the pieces to make the flare, and use the one-inch piece you cut off for a belt at the top of the cake. Glue the pieces with frosting. 7. Apply a crumb coat of frosting to the cake (this is a thin layer of frosting that seals in the crumbs). Chill the frosted cake for a little while to firm up the frosting.
Decorating the blue jeans cake:
1. Once chilled, apply the final layer of frosting using your offset spatula (or a butter knife). 2. Add stitching to your blue jeans cake using the yellow frosting. Put the yellow frosting into a pastry cone with a small hole. Pipe on frosting to mark the stitching on the bottom of the legs and the pockets. 3. Place a strip of Fruit by the Foot™ at the top to make the belt. Another Fruit by the Foot™ can be cut into strips and applied as a ‘tassel’. 4. Make patches using candies and Fruit by the Foot™.
